The Lower Greensand Hythe Beds that underlie Hindhead produce soils that are coarse, acid and free-draining. They hold very little moisture or nutrients. Once dry weather arrives, the soil loses what little it has quickly, roots stay shallow and the lawn comes under stress fast. On the elevated ridge position, the height itself adds to the drying pressure: at over 200 metres above sea level, Hindhead receives more wind than lower-lying villages around it, and that wind accelerates evaporation from both the soil surface and the grass leaf.

On severely dry Lower Greensand, the surface can also develop a degree of hydrophobicity, meaning water beads and runs off rather than soaking in. Watering alone then fails to reach the root zone because the surface tension barrier prevents absorption.

We address this with aeration, overseeding, seasonal lawn treatments and, where conditions call for it, the application of a professional wetting agent product known as Drench.

What is Drench and why is it used on Hindhead lawns?

Drench is a professional wetting agent used to improve how water moves into and is retained within a free-draining acid sandy soil profile. On the Lower Greensand soils across Hindhead, water drains through the root zone quickly and the already minimal moisture reserves are depleted fast once dry weather holds. The elevation and wind exposure at over 200 metres means surface drying is faster than on lower-lying sandy sites. Drench reduces the surface tension of water, allowing it to enter dry sandy surfaces properly and move laterally through the root zone rather than draining straight down, so on the exposed ridge above the Surrey Hills, where acid sandy soil, low fertility and wind-accelerated drying combine, it can make a meaningful difference to how long the lawn holds up before showing visible stress.

Over time, consistent moisture availability encourages roots to develop downward rather than staying near the surface. Lower Greensand naturally promotes shallow rooting, and Drench changes that by making deeper moisture accessible and giving roots a reason to follow it, so a Hindhead lawn with deeper roots handles the ridge’s exposed conditions considerably better than one with roots at the fluctuating surface. We use it as part of a broader programme alongside regular seasonal feeding, aeration and overseeding, and it works best once aeration has opened the soil so it can penetrate properly. On acid sandy soils, that regular feeding matters more than on heavier ground because nutrients wash through quickly.

What is Drench and why is it used on Hindhead lawns?

When moss keeps coming back

Moss is a familiar problem across Hindhead. The acid Lower Greensand soils already tip the balance toward moss over grass at a soil chemistry level. The heathland character of Hindhead Common and the Devil’s Punch Bowl, with their heather, birch and pine, borders many gardens and keeps soil pH low through ongoing organic acid input. In the more enclosed gardens where shade from surrounding woodland or established boundary planting reduces grass vigour, moss has every advantage it needs in any thin or weakened turf.

Moss does not cause a thin lawn, it colonises the spaces that weakened or thinning grass has left behind. In Hindhead gardens, those spaces are created by summer drought on the exposed ridge, acid pH actively favouring moss, shade from the heathland woodland boundary, and compaction from regular use. Treating the visible growth without addressing those conditions is why moss returns to the same spots each year.

Our approach combines moss control, scarification and overseeding. Moss control kills the active plant, scarification removes dead moss and the thatch layer that slows recovery, and overseeding restores density so there is less bare ground for moss to colonise. Where shade is a permanent feature, we plan around those conditions rather than making promises the site cannot support.

Lower Greensand soils compact more readily than their sandy texture suggests, and at this elevation the wind exposure means the surface dries and hardens faster than on sheltered lowland sites. Compaction reduces the already minimal moisture and nutrient-holding capacity of the soil, so summer drought gets worse as the lawn ages and the ground packs down under use.

Once air, water and nutrients cannot move through the root zone properly, the lawn shows the effects, growing slowly and recovering poorly from stress. Mechanical aeration relieves that compaction, opening channels through the soil and restoring the movement of air, water and nutrients. Where compaction has already caused thinning, we combine aeration with overseeding and seasonal treatments to support recovery, and aeration also improves the effectiveness of any moisture management treatment applied afterwards because the soil is open and receptive rather than sealed.
