What’s involved

What we actually do on the day

A renovation isn’t one job, it’s a sequence. Each stage sets up the next, which is why we work in this order.

1

Aeration

We open up the soil first, creating cracks and fissures that roots can grow down into, relieving soil compaction for a healthier lawn.

2

Scarification

We power rake the surface of the lawn, reducing dead grass, moss and thatch, creating the perfect environment for seed germination.

3

Overseeding

Fresh, hard-wearing grass seed goes straight into the bare, drought-scorched patches. We pick varieties that suit the conditions your lawn actually has, so the new grass stands a better chance next time the weather turns.

4

Top dressing

A compost based dressing protects the seeds and gives a proper bed to germinate in.

5

Wetting agent

We finish with a wetting agent, because soil that’s dried out badly turns water repellent and rain runs off rather than soaking in. The wetting agent fixes that problem.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How long until my lawn looks green again?

You’ll usually see the first seedlings within two to three weeks, then proper thickening over the following couple of months. It looks worse before it looks better, which is normal after scarification.

Is it too late in the year to renovate?

Not yet. We carry out renovations into November while the soil still holds its warmth. The earlier we get to you though, the more establishment time your new grass gets before growth slows.

Why do you aerate before you scarify?

Because it gets more out of both jobs. Aerating first opens the soil up, and scarifying afterwards breaks apart any cores sitting on the surface. Some of that organic material drops down into the holes, where it becomes a food source for the soil biology rather than something we cart away.

Can aeration and scarification be done at any time of year?

Aeration can, as long as the soil conditions are right on the day. Scarification needs the grass to be growing well enough to recover from it. What’s specific to autumn is the seed, which needs warm soil and reliable moisture to establish properly.

Will it make a mess?

There’ll be a fair bit of material coming off the lawn, especially if there’s heavy thatch or moss. We bag it up and take it away, and we’re careful about the route in and out.

Can I use the lawn afterwards?

Keep off it as much as you can for the first few weeks so the seed isn’t disturbed. We’ll talk you through watering and mowing before we leave.

Is it safe for children and pets?

Yes. A renovation is mechanical work plus seed and dressing. Anything we do apply is chosen to be safe around people, pets and wildlife.

Do I have to sign up to anything afterwards?

No. Plenty of people have the renovation done and leave it at that. If you want us back for ongoing treatments we’ll talk about it, but it’s your call.

What does it cost?

It depends on the size and condition of your lawn, so we price it once we’ve seen it. Start the assessment or give us a ring and you’ll get a clear figure rather than a guess.
