How the lawn responds to rain and irrigation
A lawn with thick thatch sheds water rather than absorbing it. After moderate rainfall, a thatchy lawn shows water beading on the surface or running off rather than soaking in promptly. The same amount of water disappears into a low-thatch lawn within a minute or two. If your lawn consistently shows surface water after moderate rain rather than absorbing it readily, thatch is likely contributing to the water repellence.

Light annual scarification, typically a single pass with a spring-tine machine in autumn, keeps thatch at a consistently low level on a lawn that is already reasonably well managed. It is a maintenance treatment, not a renovation. The lawn looks mildly disturbed afterwards and recovers within two to three weeks. It causes minimal disruption and can be followed by overseeding of any thin areas.
Periodic heavy scarification, using a fixed-blade machine at depth with multiple passes in different directions, is a renovation treatment for a lawn that has accumulated significant thatch. This is more disruptive, removes larger quantities of material, and requires an overseeding and feeding programme afterwards to restore the lawn surface.

After a more thorough scarification that has removed significant material and left the surface looking sparse, overseeding is recommended to fill any gaps created and restore density before winter.
